AbstractFindings and methodological problems of a survey on financial support for humanities in higher education are discussed. Usable data were gathered from 351 of 671 Higher Education Panel member institutions. Two weighting methodologies were employed. The conventional method assumed that nonrespondents were similar to respondents, whereas a minimum-value method assumed that nonrespondents had no financial activity in the humanities to report. The conventional approach generated dollar estimates about 85 percent higher than those produced by the alternative approach. Respondents reported by source the total amount of gifts, grants, and contracts from government and private sources that were restricted to the humanities, along with the the total amount of funds expended for the humanities from all sources. During fiscal year 1980, restricted income for the humanities ranged between $130 and $246 million. Two-fifths of this support came for the federal government, and more than one-fifth came from individuals. Humanities expenditures from all sources ranged between $1.6 and $2.9 billion, with instruction accounting for 8 of every 10 dollars spent. Ten percent of humanities expenditures were financed by government or private sources. (SW)
